In 1887, Nicholas made in staff-captains and identified in the Life Guards Regiment. There he was registered two years performing the duties of first platoon and then company commander. Then to be attached to the service of the cavalry of his father moved to the Life Guard Hussar Regiment, where the heir to the command of a squadron. Because of his modesty and simplicity of Nicholas was very popular among fellow officers. In 1890, his training was completed. Father did not burden the Crown Prince of public affairs. He appeared occasionally at meetings of the Council of State, but his eyes while constantly rushed at his watch. Like all Guard officers, Nikolai lot of time gave high life, often in the theater: he adored opera and ballet.
