8.58. What's Fayum portrait? Called Fayum funeral portraits in ancient Egypt. The name of the place onipoluchili first discovery in 1887 in the oasis of Fayoum. Fayum portraits with astonishing fidelity of the features of the dead, the Egyptians inserted into the shroud mummies at the site of persons, so that the soul, returning to his former abode, could easily find it. The flowering of art Fayum portraits belongs to the I-III centuries AD. Written with heated wax paints, these portraits have replaced a funerary masks of mummies. Fayum portrait is the result of a happy union of the three traditions: Egyptian canon of the Roman knowledge of nature and the Hellenic spirit soaring. Today, the world knows at least 750 portraits of them in the Faiyum found about 300.
