Book review

These images, often attracting his virtuosity, leave nevertheless the impression of understatement: well-designed, single, some lost figures of people - only staffage against the backdrop of beautiful, but emotionally absolutely neutral classicist buildings and large areas of St. Petersburg. In these studies, no true 'face' of St. Petersburg, neither his "soul," or his genuine grandeur nor internal trepidation and spirituality. Artists, like fixing the signs of the city, yet did not pass and did not explain any of its magical attraction or repulsive cruelty. Compared with the later "Nevsky Prospect" Gogol lithography Sadovnikov (they were sold in the form of two long strips wound on reels) - just a curiosity.
