Book review

Heliogabalus Antoninus Heliogabalus for his father belonged to the Syrian Variev aristocratic family and was called from birth Bassianom Variem Avita. His great-grandfather, grandfather and father were the priests of the Phoenician sun god El-Gabala, the patron saint of Emesa. On the maternal side of the Bassian was related to the royal family: his grandmother Julia Maesa was the sister of Julia Domna, wife of Emperor Septimius Severus and Caracalla. But perhaps its relationship with native north was closer and more direct: the mother of the future emperor, Julia Soaemias, in his youth was having an affair with Caracalla, and was told that her son was born precisely from the younger of the North, rather than from a legitimate spouse.
